Brake Drum

A brake drum is a revolving cylinder-shaped component that presses outwardly on a set of shoes or pads to create friction. Drum brakes are brakes where the shoes press the inside surface of the drum. Set inside the drums are brake shoes with brake linings (a friction material) that press on the drums from the inside to produce braking force (decelerate and stop). By forcing the brake linings against the interior surfaces of the drums, friction is produced in this arrangement. Kinetic energy is transformed into thermal energy by this friction. Compared to disc brakes, drum rotation increases the force with which the shoes and lining are pressed against the drum.
